Barefoot Books- Publisher
Let’s get to know Barefoot Books,
a publisher specializing in picture books and young readers. Barefoot Books
began in 1992 with two mothers who wanted their children to have books that
would feed the imagination and instill a respect for diversity and a love of
planet Earth. Now they own an international publishing company and have created
a “barefoot” community for parents and readers to follow. Check out http://www.barefootbooks.com/community
.
What are they looking for? “We
are looking for books that inspire and are filled with a sense of magic and
wonder. We also look for strong stories from all different cultures, reflecting
the ways of the individual culture while also touching deeper human truths that
suggest we are all one.”
What do they publish? Picture
books of 500-1000 words, young readers with 2,000-3,000 words, and anthologies
of 10,000-20,000 words. They also have an assortment of middle grade readers.
Do you have a story you want to
share with them? Submit a complete ms for picture books; outline/synopsis and 1
sample story for anthologies. They consider simultaneous submissions and
previously published works. They will respond within 4 month if you include a
SASE with your query. At the moment they are on a query freeze, so make sure
you check the website often for updates. If you are an illustrator, they are
accepting samples via MAIL only.
What do they offer authors? They
pay authors royalties of up to 5% based on retail price and offer advances.
